Rising Insurance Costs and Charging Infrastructure Gaps Challenge EV Adoption
Electric vehicle adoption faces headwinds as insurance premiums surge 37% since 2021, with repair costs climbing 20-30% due to complex battery systems. European households now allocate 7-11% of spending to transportation—a burden disproportionately carried by lower-income families.
BNP Paribas analyst James Kan notes the paradox: "Saved petrol costs could be offset by insurance and maintenance expenses for EVs in some emerging markets." The economic calculus for consumers appears less favorable than anticipated.
Charging infrastructure lags critically behind targets. While Europe's network grows at 20% annually to 1.1 million stations, this pace falls short of the 27% growth needed to hit the EU's 3.5 million target by 2030. China leads in deployment, with the US and developing nations resorting to hybrids due to grid limitations.
